Oscar Henry Cooper

Oscar Henry Cooper (November 22, 1852 – August 22, 1932)^[1] was the President of Baylor University from 1899 to 1902, and of Simmons College, now known as Hardin-Simmons University from 1902 to 1909.^[2][3]

Biography

Oscar Henry Cooper was born in Panola County, Texas, on November 22, 1852.^[2] From 1865 to 1866, he attended Marshall University, and he graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in 1872.^[2][3] He taught near Panola, Texas, then served as President of Henderson Male and Female College from 1873 to 1879 and for two years as faculty at Sam Houston Normal Institute, now known as Sam Houston State University.^[2][3] In 1881, he taught at Yale. From 1884 to 1885, he studied at the University of Berlin.^[2] From 1885 to 1886, he served as Principal of Houston High School in Houston, Texas.^[2] From 1886 to 1890, he served as Superintendent of Public Instruction.^[3] From 1890 to 1896, he served as Superintendent in Galveston, Texas.^[2]

He served as President of Baylor University from 1899 to 1902, from which he resigned after hurling a small dog out of the third story window,^[3] and of Simmons College, now known as Hardin-Simmons University from 1902 to 1909.^[2][3] In 1909, he established Cooper's Boys School in Abilene, Texas and served as its Principal until 1915.^[2] From 1928 to 1930, he taught History and Philosophy of Education at the University of Texas.^[2]

He was a founding member of the Texas State Teachers Association and helped establish the University of Texas in 1882.^[2] He also served on the Board of the Conference for Education in Texas in 1907, as Chair of the State Educational Survey in 1921, and one-term President of the Association of Texas Colleges in 1923.^[2] He was a Baptist layman.^[2]
