Orchestra Nova San Diego

Orchestra Nova San Diego

Orchestra Nova San Diego, formerly known as the San Diego Chamber Orchestra, is a chamber orchestra based in San Diego, California. The group's Artistic Director is Jung-Ho Pak.

The San Diego Chamber Orchestra was formed in 1983 and performed its first concerts in 1984.[1] The ensemble changed its name to Orchestra Nova San Diego in the fall of 2009.[2]

The orchestra has performed in many different locations; its primary venue is now the new Irwin M. Jacobs Hall in Sorrento Valley, described by Pak as "one of the most acoustically perfect halls in the country."[2] Other venues include St. Paul's Cathedral in Downtown San Diego; the Rancho Santa Fe Performing Arts Center in Rancho Santa Fe; and the Sherwood Auditorium in La Jolla.

The group has 35 full-time members, with up to 15 additional musicians being added for special occasions and Pops concerts. The group typically performs six Classics Series concerts from fall through spring, as well as summer Pops concerts in various outdoor venues.

The Orchestra has had a long-time tradition of performing Handel's Messiah in December, but it created a sensation in San Diego in 2006 by performing the only authentic 18th century re-creation of Messiah by a professional chorus and orchestra in the area. Joined by the Bach Collegium chorus in 2007, two of the three venues (area churches) sold out and the third, the California Center for the Arts (CCAE), Escondido, increased its ticket sales by over 30% from year to year.
