Ole Smoky Distillery is Tennessee's first legal moonshine distillery. The company opened in Gatlinburg, Tennessee the weekend of July 4, 2010. Their store features a working copper still and visitors can see the distilling process up close. Free moonshine samples are offered.
Products offered include a traditional corn whiskey, White Lightnin' (a smoother, more distilled product for mixed drinks), Moonshine Cherries, and seasonal flavors such as peach, sweet tea, and lemon drop. Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine products are sold in a traditional Mason-style jar. The distillery uses a 100-year-old family recipe, which was perfected with the help of Dave Pickerell, who served as the Master Distiller for Maker's Mark for over 15 years. The ingredients are locally sourced.
Ole Smoky's opening resulted in a firestorm of media attention, including a visit by the Today Show and an appearance on Martha Stewart Living Radio. It is the first federally licensed distillery in the history of East Tennessee, and is one of only four distilleries operating in the state. Jack Daniels and George Dickel received their licenses before Prohibition, and Prichards Rum opened their Tennessee facility in 1999.
