List of planets in Stargate
- List of planets in Stargate
This is a list of planets in the "Stargate" fictional universe. The central premise of "Stargate" is the exploration of other worlds through the Stargate device, and the movies and series have depicted a large number of extrasolar planets. Most of the planets that have appeared onscreen are inhabited by humans; in the series this is explained as a result of selective Stargate placement by the Ancients, and terraformation by the Goa'uld.[sgcite|The First Commandment|show=ref] Stargate Command also employs remote probes called MALPs to ensure that SG teams are only sent to inhabitable worlds. Some of the most important recurring planets include Abydos, the planet visited in the "Stargate" film, Chulak, Teal'c's homeworld, and Lantea, the first planet of Atlantis.]As only a small proportion of the possible combinations of Stargate symbols represent valid addresses, dialing the Gate at random is largely futile. In sgcite|Children of the Gods, SG-1 discovers a cartouche on Abydos with a list of valid Stargate addresses, along with a map that allows the SGC to compensate for thousands of years of stellar drift. Another list of Stargate addresses is provided by Jack O'Neill in sgcite|The Fifth Race from knowledge downloaded into his mind by a Repository of the Ancients. In sgcite|Rising|Atlantis, a list of Stargate addresses in the Pegasus galaxy is found in the Atlantis database. The SGC assigns designations to Stargate-accessible planets in the form P"xx-xxx" (M"xx-xxx" is more common in the Pegasus galaxy). Samantha Carter explains in sgcite|The Broca Divide that the designation "is based on a binary code the computer uses for extrapolation".
