School Days
Students attend school for 180 days per school year. Each school year, five additional days are added to the calendar as make-up days. Due to the tremendous amounts of snowfall in Garrett County, it's not unusual for the school to go over their 5 make-up days, and thus they are forced to either add more at the end of the school year or rearrange the school calendar so school is in session during holidays and other scheduled days off.
Monday through Friday, students have 5 periods a day. For years, the school had a 7-period day schedule, but in an effort to unionize the two high schools of the county, Northern and Southern, both school switched to a 5-period day block schedule for the 2009-2010 school year.
AP Classes
Northern Garrett High School has 8 Advanced Placement choices available for the students:
- AP Biology
- AP Calculus
- AP English Literature & Composition
- AP Physics
- AP Psychology
- AP U.S. History
- AP U.S. Government & Politics
- AP World History
However, due to the lack of students signing up for these classes and the lack of teacher/guidance counselor support, on any given year, the likelihood of more than three of these classes having enough students to form a class is slim to none.
Special Events
War of the Classes
On the early dismissal day before students leave for Thanksgiving break, students gather in the gymnasium. Ten to twelve students from each grade are elected to compete against the other grades in games such as "Turkey Bowling," War of the Classes, and the Loudest Class. It is organized by science teacher, Student Government adviser, and Best Buddies adviser, Mrs. Harman.
