Northeast Ecological Corridor

Corredor Playa San Miguel

The Northeast Ecological Corridor (NEC) is a protected Nature Reserve area located on the northeast coastline of Puerto Rico, between the towns of Luquillo and Fajardo. It was put under protected status by former Puerto Rico governor Aníbal Acevedo Vilá in April 2008. The NEC comprises 3,200 acres, which include such diverse habitats as forests, wetlands, beaches, coral communities, and a bioluminescent lagoon. The corridor is home to over 850 species, 50 of them endemic and threatened, including the Snowy Plover, the Puerto Rican Boa, the Hawksbill Sea Turtle and the West Indian Manatee.

The beaches along the NEC, which are close to 5.43 miles long. are important nesting grounds for the leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). The NEC is one of the three most important nesting sites for the leatherback sea turtle in the U.S. Data gathered by the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources indicates that an average of 213 leatherback nests are reported annually.[1] The leatherback turtle is the largest marine turtle in the world, and has been federally listed as endangered since 1970
