The song is about grieving after the death of a loved one. There are several rumors as to whom it might be about, the most common being that
Dexter Holland aka Bryan Keith Holland, wrote it after the death of a previous girlfriend, (possibly wife and mother of his daughter Alexa) in a car accident. But he avoids the subject (and song) in interviews and has never confirmed or denied any rumor. On the "Greatest Hits" (DVD Side), he and Noodles talk about "Gone Away" and there is no indication that it is about any one particular person, although Dexter does seem slightly uncomfortable at the subject being brought up.
tructure
The song is in the time signature of 4/4. It utilizes fifth chords in a progression of F5-Ab5-Eb5 and Bb5.
Music video
The music video shows the band playing in a dark
slaughterhouse .Dexter Holland , for most of the video, sings to a shining lightbulb, presumably representative of the soul of the lost person. He is the only band member to interact with this bulb, though other lightbulbs are shown in each band member's respective rooms. Dexter also sings into a suspended microphone which is also used in the video; it swings back and forth as the video fades to black.
