Barnett made 11 appearances for Melbourne in the 1933 VFL season, after arriving from West Albury.[2] While he was in Melbourne his former club merged with East Albury to form the Albury Football Club and he joined them as captain-coach in 1934.[3] The following year he won the Ovens & Murray Football League's Best and Fairest award.
