Ngwane V

Ngwane V

Ngwane V (1876 - December 10, 1899) was the paramount chief of Swaziland from February, 1895 until his death. He is sometimes referred to as king Bhunu.

Ngwane's short reign was marked by the continuing tension and eventual war between the United Kingdom and the Boers of the Transvaal and Orange Free State

The King was put on trial for his alleged involvement in the killing of chief indvuna Mbhabha Nsibandze. The King was acquitted of the crime, but he was given a heavy fine for permitted public violence, and saddled with the trial’s costs.

On December 10, 1899 while performing the sacred Incwala ceremony, the king, who was only 23, died suddenly. His death was kept secret from the people until the ceremony was finished.

He was succeeded by his infant son Sobhuza II after a regency by Queen Labotsibeni Gwamile Mdluli.
