Newsmill is a Swedish website for "news commentary and debate". [1] Debate was opened to the public on September 3, 2008. .[2] It was operated at that time by Peter Magnus Nilsson (CEO, editor and publisher), Leo Lagercrantz (Editorial Director) and Karen Eder Ekman, who had previously worked at Expressen and Aftonbladet. [3] Currently Ekman has been succeeded by Sakine Madon and Annika Nordgren Christensen. [4] Newsmill is owned by the Bonnier Group, a giant media conglomerate, Proventus, an investment group, Nelson and Lagercrantz. There are links to other mainstream media, since Bonnier also own Dagens Nyheter, Expressen and Résumé, [5] which frequently comment on opinion articles in Newsmill. Expressen also publishes, every Sunday, a summary of the debates on Newsmill.

Nomination for the Stora Journalistpriset
Newsmill was one of three nominees for the 2009 Stora Journalistpriset in the category of "innovation". The reason for nomination was that "it rejuvenates opinion journalism, invites an audience and asks new questions."
Criticism
The nomination was criticized by the Left Party's Ali Esbati in an article in Aftonbladet. [6] Esbati argued that even if Newsmill publishes articles from a variety of political perspectives, from high-ranking politicians to unknown writers, on the other hand outspoken reactionaries had found themselves a "playground" on the internet in Newsmill. He described Newsmill as "sensational opinion-production" and "a cynical and tendentious brutalization of the debate".
Esbati indicate that the day before the nomination was announced Newsmill had removed the article "The Revolution against Evolution", after a disclosure that it was a fake. A little later Newsmill also removed an article by Swedish neo-Nazi Björn Björkqvist in which he attacked the anti-racist magazine Expo. However, these events prompted the site to develop a new policy, in which only "writers who have private or professional experience" are published. [7]
Other information
On Newsmill one can buy editorial space in the section titled "Seminars", which are displayed with a pink background. Thus 100,000 Swedish Kronor per week can guarantee publication. [8] When the magazine Internetworld, listed Sweden's 100 best website in November 2008, Newsmill was rated 45th as the "best opinion site." [9] Newsmill was also named best public opinion site in 2009, coming in at 36th. [10]
