Owned by Jim and Chloe Read[1] and based in Oswestry, Shropshire in the United Kingdom, Newgate Clocks has been described as a "quintessentially British"[2] high-value added business that sells to high end department stores such as Selfridges and John Lewis.[3]
Newgate Clocks took over the use of a disused Laura Ashley factory unit in Oswestry that urgently needed repairing and a full refurbishment. As a result, Newgate called in the support of the Rural Regeneration Zone’s Redundant Buildings Grant Scheme. They provided a wealth of advice as well as financial support throughout the project.[4] The rural areas of the West Midlands have largely been a low wage, low skill economy based on declining industries.[5] With the help of the RGB grant "a disused warehouse [had] been brought into productive use, supporting the creation and safe guarding of jobs in the area".[6]
Clocks manufactured by the company have appeared on various television programmes including Eastenders, and many celebrities have professed to owning Newgate Clocks, including Gordon Ramsay.[7]
