George Anderson Black

George Anderson Black

George Anderson Black was the head of the Black clan and great-grandfather of Conrad Black. Originally from the New England area of the United States, Black migrated to Canada to find work. In Canada, he worked for the Hudson's Bay Company in Halifax and later in moved his family to Winnipeg, Manitoba.

His son George Montegu Black II would later establish Western Breweries Limited in 1927 and his son would inherit the business. Future generations of Blacks have made the family famous in Canada, the United States and United Kingdom.

Although not rich, George A. Black was well connected to the elite families in Halifax, especially with Maxwell Aitken, later Lord Beaverbrook.
