The Nepal Railways Corporation Ltd. operates a short narrow gauge railway that extends from India into Nepal. Raxaul-Amlekhagunj (NGR) and Jayanagar-Janakpuur-Bijalpura (NJJR), the two short distance narrow gauge railways were introduced in Nepal during the Rana period. NGR was more important as it served people from different parts of the country to reach Amlekhagunj to get lorries for Bhimphedi. One could then reach Kathmandu from Bhimphedi on foot.

Its gauge is 762 mm (2 ft 6 in) though this may change to 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) under Project Unigauge. [1]

Future expansion

Nepal has an ambitious expectation for running East-West Railway linking to Kathmandu. Also Nepal hopes to have a North-South Railway line to link the railway systems of India and China. Nepal might be integrated with the Asian and SAARC Railway systems too. But it might take a longer time and it depends much on the political situation in the region.

We must be practical first to have a better and direct railway link with the ports of Kolkata and Nowa-Sova in India. Janakpur, Birgunj and Bhairahawa are the three suitable points for this purpose. After the extension of board gauge link to Janakpur and Bhairahawa, Birgunj will not be able to maintain its present position as the biggest entry point of Nepal. Lumbini-Hetauda-Janakpur section might be the first East-West Railway line in Nepal. These two entry points are not only of tourist value, they might also be the most economical routes for trade with India and overseas. The Birgunj Dry Port is the first place in Nepal to get broad gauge link. Biratnagar will be the second point to get such link in near future. We may expect to get the third broad gauge link in Bhairahawa sooner. Though Indian railway has completed the survey for extension of broad gauge railway link to Bardibas, it might take a longer time to come into operation. Nepalgunj, Kakarvitta and Mahendranagar are other three points expecting to get similar railway links. But it might be possible in a longer period only after the conversion of meter gauge system in India itself.
