Origins and Aims

Necessary Evil was created by Kate Seagroatt in 2003[1] and has reinvented Gothic fashion 'without the crushed velvet cliché'.[2] Necessary Evil is notable for Kate's dedication to design clothes that fit real women and flatter the shape:

"'One size fits no one,' said Kate. 'You’re either bursting at the seams or it’s like a sack. I like to show off the shape, most people forget women have a middle.'"[3]

Publicity

Kate Seagroatt has been interviewed many times about the brand and her retail company and organises events in Birmingham, where the company is based, for the local alternative community.[4]

The Granddaughter of Andrew Sachs, Georgina Baillie, who was famously involved in the 'Sachsgate' scandal had previously modelled for Kate's Clothing.[5]

Several other famous faces have modelled for Necessary Evil in the past, including Bianca Beauchamp[6] and Lenore.[7]

New collections are released every season and past collections have included:

  • 1940's style Ladies' Clothing
  • Ladies' and Men's Steampunk Clothing
  • Gothic Ladies' and Men's wear

Men's Wear

Necessary Evil has also been praised for its men's wear collections which are more wide-ranging than some other alternative brands[1] and the 2011 Autumn collection is due to expand the range further.[8]
