Biography
Neal Ashkanasy is a Professor of Management at The University of Queensland Business School. His PhD in Social and Organisational Psychology, is also from The University of Queensland.[1] Professor Ashkanasy previously worked in the schools of psychology, commerce, engineering, management, and business.[2]
He is one of the leading researchers in organisational behaviour in Australia and internationally. Current research interests include:

- Ethics in organisational behaviour
Professor Ashkanasy is recognised as one of the originators and current thought leaders in the study of emotion in organisations. He was the first Australian to be elected a Fellow of[3] (SIOP).

- [[4] Dr. Ashkanasy is one of a very small group of scholars who has developed theoretical models and conducted empirical research so effectively on emotions in the workplace that this topic has moved within the past decade from obscurity to mainstream research in I-O psychology. His annual book series on this topic is responsible in part for what is now being called in our field the “affective revolution".]
Professor Ashakansy entered academic life after an 18-year career in professional engineering and management.[5] He was a former national president of the Hydrology and Water Resources Institution of Engineers and oversaw the planning and building of the Wivenhoe Dam.

Primary Research Interests
Professor Ashkansy's research essentially focuses on the role of Emotion in the Workplace, the four key areas of interest include:
1. Emotions at work
- This is an area that is gaining wide recognition in organisational research and is the principle focus of Professor Ashkanasy's work. A number of his recent studies have been funded through various ARC grants.
- To date Professor Ashkanasy has organized and Chaired seven international “Conferences on Emotions and Organizational Life”. Three books have been published based on the principal proceedings of the conferences.
- A number of Professor Ashkanasy's publications in this area have appeared in the following journals:
Academy of Management Executive, Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management, Leadership Quarterly, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Emotion Review and Human Resources Management Review.
- Volume 7 of the annual book series Research on Emotion in Organizations is to be published in 2011.
2. Leadership and leader-member relationships
This area of research relates to factors affecting relationships between organisational supervisors and their subordinates. Professor Ashkanasy's areas of interests cover:
- Attribution theory: His research includes a study of attribution processes with articles being published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Journal of Applied Social Psychology, Journal of Social Psychology, Leadership Quarterly, and Australian Psychologist.
- Leader-member exchange theory: Investigates the role of emotions and values in leader-member relationships. This work has been published in the Journal of Social Psychology and Leadership Quarterly.
3. Organisational culture
Professor Ashkanasy has two principle foci for this research:
- Organisational change and mergers: Several studies have been completed examining culture changes in accounting firms, academic institutions, and government agencies, with papers being published in Accounting, Organizations and Society,Australian Academic Research Libraries, and the British Journal of Management. An article was published in the Elsevier Science/JAI Press book, Advances on Mergers and Acquisitions.
- International organisational culture: This research, part-funded by the ARC, includes cross-cultural studies as a part of the international Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) project, with the development and validation of a new measure of organisational culture. Reports appeared in the Journal of World Businessand Asia-Pacific Journal of Management. Professor Ashkanasy co-authored the ‘Future Orientation’ chapter in the main GLOBE book, and co-authorship (with Drs. Mark Peterson, Florida Atlantic University; and Celeste Wilderom, University of Twente) of the Handbook of Organizational Culture and Climate.
4. Ethics in organizational behaviour
Increasing recognition has been gained in this important field of research. Recent projects include an ARC study that was published in Business Ethics Quarterly. Professor Ashkanasy's publications have appeared in Accounting, Organizations and Society, Behavioral Research in Accounting, Research on Accounting Ethics,and the Journal of Business Ethics.
Research Grants
Working in collaboration with national and international academics, Professor Ashkanasy has contributed to 11 major Australian Research Council(ARC) projects since 1998, worth over $1.8 million. Current ARC projects:
- Employee wellbeing and productivity: The role of territoriality, conflict and emotions. (2011-2013 with O. B. Ayoko, K. A. Jehn and C W. Clegg)
- The contribution of project leader behaviours to processes and outcomes in large scale projects. (2009-2012 with A. Pisarski, P. Jordan, A. Chang, R. Zolin, C. Hatcher & M. Capelli)

- Elton Mayo, Award Recipient 2011
Professor Ashkanasy was recently awarded the Elton Mayo Research and Teaching Award 2011, which was presented the official IOP 2011 Conference Dinner, held in Brisbane. Crissa Sumner, Queensland Chair of the College of Organisational Psychologists, received the Elton Mayo Professional Practice Award.

In addition, he administers two well known e-mail discussion lists, affiliated with the Academy of Management: Emonet and Orgcult. The e-mail groups, with a combined subscription of over 1500 members, comprise of leading international researchers who facilitate scholarly discussions.

Professor Ashkanasy is the official Chairperson for the 9th Industrial and Organisation Psychology Conference: IOP 2011 and one of the Co-chair for the 8th International Conference on Emotions and Worklife: Emonet VIII.
He chaired discipline tracks at three international conferences (IFSAM, ANZAM, Southern Management Assoc. and US Academy of Management). During 2001-2002 Professor Ashkanasy was Chair of the ‘Managerial and Organizational Cognitions’ Division of the US Academy of Management – the first Australian to be elected Chair of an Academy of Management Division. He has a particularly strong reputation in emotional intelligence and has been invited as a Keynote Speaker at several conferences.

Professor Ashkanasy obtained his PhD in Social and Organizational Psychology from the University of Queensland in 1989, following an 18-year career as a professional engineer.
