Origin of The name
Originally called Singwangju Station, this station was renamed South Gwangju on April 1, 1938. South Gwangju Station is now closed and being developed as a rest area for Gwangju citizens.
Features
Decorated with simple yet distinct patterns, it is a station that targets visitors to nearby markets, university hospitals, and universities. Its interior gives a clean atmosphere with a clean color scheme in connection with the line No. 3 to be developed. It is designed to give familiarity to visitors by using elegant finish materials in bright and soft colors.
Surroundings
As a gate to Namgwang areas and Jeungsimsa, it s a hub station.
It is located in an area with increasing traffic demand, due to the major commercial area formed around South Gwangju General Market. Traffic in this area tends to be jammed during rush hours as educational institutions, including Jeonnam Medical School, Choson University, Choson College of Nursing, and governmental and public offices such as Military Manpower Administration and Dong-gu Office, are clustered around this station.
Detached houses and tenement houses are distributed evenly along both sides of the road.[1]
