List of New York Islanders head coaches

There have been 13 head coaches for the New York Islanders, a professional ice hockey team based in Uniondale, New York. They are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL).cite web |url=http://islanders.nhl.com/ |title=New York Islanders |accessdate=2008-06-07 |last= |first= |coauthors= |date= |work= |publisher=NHL.com] The Islanders began play in 1972 and rapidly developed a dominant team that won four consecutive Stanley Cup championships in the early 1980s. They play their home games at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Long Island.

Hall of fame coach Al Arbour coached the Islanders three different times, from 1973–1986, later from 1988–1994, and then for one game in 2007.cite web |url=http://www.hockey-reference.com/coaches/arboual01c.html |title=Al Arbour |accessdate=2008-06-05 |last= |first= |coauthors= |date= |publisher=Sports Reference] Arbour is also the only head coach to make it into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Phil Goyette, the first coach for the Islanders coached the Islanders for his whole coaching career, along with Earl Ingarfield, and Bill Stewart. Coaches Arbour, Terry Simpson, Peter Laviolette, Steve Stirling, and current coach Ted Nolan have all led the team into the playoffs.

Statistically, the best coach was Nolan, who has a winning percentage of 0.561.cite web |url=http://www.hockey-reference.com/coaches/nolante01c.html|title=Ted Nolan |accessdate=2008-06-05 |last= |first= |coauthors= |date= |publisher=Sports Reference] He is followed by Arbour, who, (averaging his three different stints of coaching) had a winning percentage of 0.692, including his interim coaching for one game in the 2007 season. The poorest winning percentage is held by Phil Goyette, who in the 1972–1973 season won six games out of a total of the 48 he coached. Arbour is the only coach on the Islanders to with the Jack Adams Award and lead the team into Stanley Cup championships.
