NBC Nightside (also known as NBC News Nightside) was an overnight news program which aired from 1991 to 1998 on NBC. The show was produced in three half-hour long segments. It usually aired live nightly from 1:00-2:30 a.m. Eastern Time, followed by rebroadcasts until 4:30 or 5 a.m. local time, depending on the individual affiliate.

History

NBC Nightside premiered on November 4, 1991, and was NBC's second attempt at a late night news program after NBC News Overnight, which lasted seventeen months from 1982 to 1983.[1]

Unlike its competitors CBS News Up to the Minute and ABC's World News Now, which were based in New York, Nightside was based out of the NBC News Channel in Charlotte, North Carolina,[1] a network newsfeed service providing customized reports and video of national news to NBC affiliates, and which was based in studios connected to those of Charlotte NBC affiliate WCNC-TV. Unlike the other network overnight newscasts, NBC Nightside ran in the early morning hours seven days a week.

Some of Nightside's many anchors went on to national success including Antonio Mora and Campbell Brown.

Despite financial profitability of the show and decent ratings, it was canceled by the network and aired its last telecast on September 18, 1998, with NBC filling the overnight timeslot beginning three days later with NBC All Night, a block consisting of repeats of the network's late night talk shows.

Steve Capus, the current president for NBC News, was a senior producer for the program.
