The book chronicles the events surrounding the slave mutiny that took place on the Spanish schooner Amistad in 1839. It discusses the roles and dynamics of Spain, England, the United States as they related to the 19th century slave trade. It places particular focus on United States v. The Amistad Africans 40 U.S. (15 Pet.) 518 (1841), the United States Supreme Court case that adjudicated the fate of the people that were taken captive on Amistad.

Legacy

The book served as the basis for the 1997 film Amistad, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Anthony Hopkins as John Quincy Adams, Morgan Freeman as an abolitionist, Djimon Hounsou as Cinqué, and Matthew McConaughey as Roger Sherman Baldwin, their lawyer.
