Music Theory Online

Music Theory Online (ISSN 1067-3040), or MTO, is a peer-reviewed, academic journal specializing in music theory and analysis. It is the online journal of the Society for Music Theory (SMT), which also publishes the print journal Music Theory Spectrum.

The journal’s subtitle calls it "A Journal of Criticism, Commentary, Research, and Scholarship." "Published several times each year, each issue includes features such as articles, book reviews, and reports from a distinguished panel of International Correspondents. In addition, MTO publishes announcements of upcoming conferences and calls for papers, a list of job opportunities, abstracts of recently completed and in-progress dissertations, and summaries of recently published books."[1]

MTO began in March 1993, making it a relatively early online journal. Its initial issues were designated as part of vol. 0. Vol. 1 began in January 1995.[2] Its founding editor was Lee A. Rothfarb. It is presently edited by Matthew Shaftel.
