He is one of the lead developers of the Hurd/L4 which is supposed to supersede the GNU Mach microkernel in GNU. He also initiated Debian GNU/Hurd to push forward the development of GNU Hurd.

Brinkmann studied mathematics at the Ruhr University Bochum, located in Bochum, North Rhine-Westphalia, until his graduation in 2007.
