History

Extensive consultation was conducted between the City of Monash and the local community including a feasibility study by Michael King and Associates in 1997 and 1998, which included detailed consultation with residents, schools and potential user groups. The design and consultancy contract won by Williams Ross Architects resulted in one of the finest architectural features in the local community and the leisure industry. The City of Monash invested approximately $17 million to position the facility as one of Australia’s finest.

Built on the site of the former Waverley Outdoor Swimming Pool, Waverley Road, Glen Waverley, the Council vision was realised with the Centre regarded by many as one of the most attractive multi-faceted community leisure venues in Australia.

RANS Management Group successfully finalised the management agreement with the City of Monash in early 2001 and were involved in configuring the resources and planning to operate the facility from May 2001.

The Monash Aquatic and Recreation Centre opened on 10 December 2001. This pre-Christmas timing proved to be less than ideal, and as a result the strong community interest in the lead up to opening did not immediately translate into a high level of usage. Usage increased in January, however the effects of a cooler than normal Summer resulted in the facility not realising it’s predicted visits over the January – February period. Functional issues related to the pool operations, filtration, air handling and general building structures resulted in some negative customer feedback, and therefore significant management issues.

Due to issues unrelated to the operation of the Monash Aquatic and Recreation Centre, RANS Management Group entered into voluntary administration in June 2002, and subsequently handed over operation of the Centre in July 2002. From this time the City of Monash assumed full management of the facility.
