Background

"Mine Bengidzakiwe", is a traditional song whose composer is anonymous but lives on, in Swaziland's ceremonies. The theme is unclear but the direct translation goes, "I was drunk". Apparently, it originates from a typical african homestead where a husband has two wives. The story goes that the one wife locked the other one in a "hut" (traditional kitchen) hopefully with the hope of spending enough time with the husband. The song comes from a third person's point of view saying, "You should never lock someone in the hut" and the culprit wife resounds with the line, "I was drunk".

Recording

"Mine Bengidzakiwe", was recorded by Sabside and the performing artists were Deborah Steenkamp and Sifiso S-tone Magagula. It was recorded in Johannesburg, South Africa, apparently in Sabside's living room with minimal studio equipment.

Conflict

Since its prerelease the song has been a center of controversy in the music industry regarding its origin. Most people, though they know the song, would not be so sure about who the artist is. Most would name the licensor as the composer. That might be because Sabside at the time was not such a popular figure which might have resulted in the song thriving without a producer-artist to reckon with.[citation needed]
