Club Career
MFK Dubnica
Bortel started his professional career as a central defender for the youth team of MFK Dubnica in 1998, and remained at the club until 2005, wehen he transferred to Italian football with Serie D club, Manduria Calcio.
Manduria Calcio
Bortel began his adventure in Italy with Serie D club Manduria Calcio, wher in his first season, he managed 28 appearances as both a right back and center back. Following several impressive displays, the young Slovak joined Serie C1 side S.S. Manfredonia Calcio in 2006.
SS Manfredonia Calcio
He instantly worked his way into the club's first team following his 2006 transfer, and became a key[says who?] figure to their defence line, appearing 50 times in just 2 seasons in Manfredonia. In January 2009, FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber rejected Bortel's youth club MFK Dubnica to request S.S. Manfredonia Calcio to pay training compensation, following several disagreements regarding the young defender. [1]
Calcio Catania - SPAL
On 25 June 2009, he was signed by Calcio Catania on a four-year contract. He was sent back to the Lega Pro Prima Divisione with SPAL 1907 in co-ownership deal.[2] During his stay at SPAL, Bortel made 38 appearances in the league.
