Microblogging novel

Microblogging novel

(Also known as micro novel)

A fictional work or novel written and distributed in small pieces defined by the system it is published within.

For example a 'Twitter novel' would be published in chapters of 140 characters or less. A 'Facebook novel' may be defined by finishing a chapter within the 'read more' limitations ie: 300 characters or less.

There are no limitations on subject matter, overall length or quality of work.

History

Micro novels are simply an evolution of fiction as social media changes. This also changes with peoples leisure time and their methods of accessing media. With the introduction of the cellphone came the Japanese sensation of the Cell phone novel where instalments were sent out to commuters and readers via SMS. Then the smartphone evolved making social networking a mobile possibility and microblogging systems such as Twitter came online. Social networking sites such as Myspace and facebook changed to include microblogging platforms so an obvious next stage for writers was to use these infrastructures to get their stories read by the world.

An obvious progression from blog fiction to encompass the world's rapidly declining attention span.

Similar manifestations include flash fiction commonly agreed to be a work of fiction completed in 1000 words or less.
