Education

  • 1966 B.Sc. Hebrew University
  • 1968 M. Sc. Georgetown University
  • 1975 Ph.D. Rockefeller University (with F. H. Field)

Professional Affiliations

Michael N. Mautner served as Associate Professor at the Rockefeller University, Research Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, Adjunct Professor at the University of Canterbury, and Research Chemist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He served on the editorial boards of “Space Science and Resources” and “Astrobiology”, and member of the Chemistry Board and Space Settlement Board of the Lifeboat Foundation.

In 1995, he founded The Panspermia Society (SOLIS). This vision was partly inspired by prominent scientists e.g. Lord Kelvin (1880's), Svante Arrhenius (1906), Hoyle and Wickramasinge (1970's to present), as well as astrobiologists. The scientific community has been studying panspermia missions since 1977.

Research interests

Space Science, Astrobiology, Astroecology: Astrochemical and prebiotic ion chemistry. Organic and physical chemistry of planetary materials. Nutrients, and biological responses to carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. Astroecology and the prospects for future life in space. Directed panspermia and biotic space ethics.

Mass Spectrometry and Gas Phase Ion Chemistry: Kinetics and thermochemistry of ions. Clusters, hydrogen bonding, charge transfer complexes, temperature and pressure effects on ion reactions. Applications to physical organic chemistry, biophysics and astrochemistry. Mautner published numerous papers and book chapters on physical chemistry and planetary science. In chemistry, published under the transliterated name Michael Meot-Ner (Mautner) [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]
