Michael Loebenstein

Michael Loebenstein (*1974, Vienna, Austria) is a curator and researcher in the field of audiovisual archiving and visual history.

His career over the past 15 years has included senior positions at the Austrian Film Museum, working as the head of the Education & Outreach department and as Curator for Special Programs.[1]

In 2008 he was appointed to the board of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Arts and Culture’s film funding agency, serving a 3 year term. From 2009 until 2011 he was an elected member of the Executive Committee of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) [2]

Since 2009 he has acted as project manager and researcher at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for History and Society where he has been responsible for directing large-scale historical research projects including film.stadt.wien. [3]

In 2010 he curated the much-lauded exhibition Wien im Film at the Wien Museum in Vienna, a celebration of a century of images capturing the essence of the city. [4]

He is the author and editor of numerous publications, books and articles on film history, curatorship and contemporary film culture. He is a co-founder and editor of the film periodical kolik.film, published since 2004. In addition, he was film critic for the Viennese paper Falter for four years. His prolific output has included contributions to various books, magazines and articles as a feature writer, commentator and editor.

Notable publications include Film Curatorship: Archives, Museums and the Digital Marketplace (2008),[5] Peter Tscherkassky (2007) [6] and Gustav Deutsch (2009).[7] He has also been responsible for the production of several DVDs including the award-winning Entuziasm by Dziga Vertov (Edition Filmmuseum),[8] and has collaborated with the film composer Michael Nyman on a number of projects.

He frequently receives invitations to speak and present at film festivals, conferences and symposiums and to lecture in educational establishments across Europe and in the USA.

In June 2011 he was appointed CEO of the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia.
