Michael Liebreich

Michael Liebreich is the chief executive of Bloomberg New Energy Finance[1] Liebreich founded New Energy Finance in 2004,[2] and was its chairman and chief executive until the privately-held firm was acquired by Bloomberg L.P in 2009.[3]

Liebreich is also a visiting professor at London’s Imperial College Energy Futures Lab,[4] a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Sustainable Energy, a member of the UN's Advisory Group on Energy and Climate Change,[5] an adviser to UN-Energy,[6] a member for the 2012 London Games Committee of Right to Play UK,[7] a former member of the advisory board of the Clinton Global Initiative's Energy and Climate Change working group,[8] a member of Accenture Global Energy Board, Chairman of the St. Marks Hospital foundation,[9] and a member of Energy Leadership Forum, E+Co, an NGO financing clean energy in the developing world.[10] In 2011, Liebreich was executive producer on a video short illustrating the world's ultimate shift away from fossil fuels, entitled "First They Ignore You...".[11] Previously Liebreich was a consultant and entrepreneur, and the UK Head of Technology Venture Capital for Groupe Arnault, the family investment company of Bernard Arnault, the chairman and CEO of LVMH. Prior to that he was deputy managing director and director Sport News Television for the Associated Press in London. From 1990 to 1995 he worked as a consultant for McKinsey & Co.[12] He is also the founder of the Liebreich foundation, a small grant-giving charity with a focus on environment and development. [13]

Liebreich earned a BA in Mechanical Engineering at Cambridge University, Christ’s College in 1984, and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1990.[14]

Awards

Liebreich is a three-time finalist in the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.[15]

Personal life

Born in 1963 in Northolt in West London, Michael Liebreich was raised in Acton. He attended Silverdale Prep School followed by Colet Court and St Paul’s of London. He graduated in 1984 with First Class Honours from Christ’s College, Cambridge, where he specialized in Mechanics, Fluid Dynamics, Thermodynamics and Nuclear Engineering. In 1990 he graduated from Harvard Business School, where he was a Baker Scholar and was awarded a Harkness Fellowship by the Commonwealth Fund of New York.

From 1985 to 1993 he was a member of the British Ski Team (Moguls) and competed in World & European Cups, World & European Championships and 1992 Albertville Olympics.[16] He is also co-author of "The Complete Skier" (BBC Books, 1993).[17]
