Michael D. Fricklas is Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Viacom Inc. He has been General Counsel of Viacom (and preceding companies) since 1998. Before that, he was Vice President and General Counsel of Minorco (U.S.A.) Inc. (now part of Anglo American PLC) and a lawyer with Shearman & Sterling and a predecessor of DLA Piper.[1]
Fricklas is secretary and a member of the Board of Trustees of Jazz at Lincoln Center, of the American Jewish Committee, New York Chapter, and is Treasurer of the Association of General Counsel. He was a member of the board of Blockbuster Inc. from 2004 to 2005. He is also on the board of visitors of Boston University School of Law and Secretary of the Association of General Counsel.[1][2]
Fricklas speaks extensively on copyright issues, arguing for a balanced copyright law that seeks effective solutions against piracy, while at the same time recognizing the importance of fair use and other limitations.<re name="spkrbio"/>[3]
He is the lead lawyer for Viacom in the case Viacom v. YouTube and has written and spoken extensively on the subject.[4] The case was filed in 2007 in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Summary judgment motions were filed in April 2010.
