He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Michael Bauer suffered a stroke on 3 February 1943 and died on 15 February 1943 in Sclobodka, Russia.
