National Seismological Service

National Seismological Service

The Mexican National Seismological Service (Spanish: Servicio Sismologico Nacional, SSN) , was founded on September 5, 1910, by the Mexican government as part of an international effort to monitor seismic activity. It became part of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 1929, and it became an adjunct department of UNAM's Geophysics Institute in 1948.

Nine monitoring stations were established between 1910 and 1923, seven of which continue to operate to date, constituting one of the oldest monitoring systems that have operated continuously in the American continent. Currently, the SSN has 22 seismic observatories and has plans to add 11 more to its nationwide system.
