ASK Rīga is the name of a professional basketball club based in Riga, Latvia. "ASK" stands for "Armijas Sporta Klubs" (in English: Army Sports Club).

History

The basketball team ASK Rīga was very popular in the 1950s-60s and were European club champions in 1958, 1959 and 1960. The team continued to play in the Soviet League until the end of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. After the withdrawal of the Soviet Union's support, the club changed its name to Brocēni Rīga, and they were a dominant club in Latvia's newly formed Latvian Basketball League in the early 90's. However, in 2001 the team and was reformed under the name of Skonto Rīga. That team disbanded again in the summer of 2004.

ASK Rīga was then reformed on March 23, 2006, supported by the Riga City Council, the Latvian National Armed Forces, Parex banka and various other sponsors. On May 20, 2007, ASK Rīga won the Latvian Basketball League (LBL) title, beating BK Ventspils in the finals.

In the 2007-08 season, ASK Riga finished second place in the LBL, and in the Baltic League they finished in third place.

Other Uses

The Ice hockey team ASK Rīga played in the Latvian Hockey League between 1931 and 1940. They won the championship five times. In the past ASK Rīga has also been the name of a Latvian football club.
