Plumstead Common

Plumstead Common

Plumstead Common is a common in Plumstead, (SE18) in the London Borough of Greenwich, south-east London. It is bound to the north by Old Mill Road and to the south by Plumstead Common Road. To the east lies Winn or Winn's Common. Substantial remains of the Old Mill still stand and have been incorporated into the public house of the same name.

Edwin Cross was the last known commoner to exercise the right of letting small cattle (goats) graze on Plumstead Common and neighbouring Woolwich Common in the 1970s.

Public Houses

Plumstead Common has a number of traditional public houses with distinctive names. "The Star" which doesn't shine in the sky, "The Woodman" who doesn't cut down trees, "The Ship" that cannot sail the seas and "The Old Mill" which doesn't grind corn. Making no comment on the "Prince Albert", and the "Fanny on the Hill", "Who'd a Thought It!". Only the desperate though would want to be seen more than once in the 'Who'd a thought it', a scruffy, smelly, sticky floored, barn of a pub inhabited more or less exclusively by shaven headed, tattooed, rat faced, semi-feral proles clad in track suits/trainers sporting copies of the Sun. If you have an IQ in double figures and any sense of self respect, just stay away!. You have been warned.

Churches

Essentially a Protestant/Anglican area, but non-confirmists abound. A cluster of Plymouth Brethren meeting in their halls in Richmond Hall, Plum Lane and Willenhall Road; Evangelicals meet at The Slade Evangelical Church, Methodists also have two congregations.
