- Hooligans on E
"Hooligans On E" has been recorded by three bands,
The Libertines ,Babyshambles , and Kill City. The song was supposedly written byLisa Moorish and co-written byPete Doherty and Pete Jones. There is no known distribution of the Libertines version, but it can be assumed that this became the Babyshambles version after The Libertines split up. Additionally, Lisa Moorish's band, Kill City, released a single featuring the song.Hooligans On E
"Hooligans On E" was first penned by Pete Welsh and Pete Doherty in Cardiff's Marriott Hotel room while both their bands (Kill City & The Libertines) were touring together. Lisa Moorish was also present. It came about after Welsh had been to watch his favourite football team, Swansea and had noticed how the crowd's love of larger had been replaced by ecstasy after drinking alcohol was banned in the ground. After telling Doherty of this strange day one night in The Marriott Hotel, Doherty began belting out an E chord on his acoustic guitar and singing "Hooligans on E, Meat pie and Burberry". A few weeks later Welsh was surprised to hear a full version of the song as he considered it "throw away" but he did like the song and in his book about The Libertines ("Kids In The Riot: High And Low With The Libertines") cites it as a testament to Doherty's composition skills. When Doherty was in jail Pete Welsh and Mick from Kill City recorded their version of the song. When Doherty heard this version he was complimentary but insistent that his was the definitive version. The song was later recorded by The Libertines in the hope that it would appear on their second album, however it didn't make the cut. Although Alan McGee (The Libertines manager at the time) liked it so much he wanted to release it as a single, it was scrapped and only saw the light of day as a Babyshambles and Kill City song. The song is well received by fans at Babyshambles' and Kill City gigs.
