Battles/wars Awards Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross Max Chmel (3 May 1915 – 18 April 1945) was a highly decorated Unteroffizier in the Wehrmacht during World War II. He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Max Chmel was killed on 18 April 1945 in Müncheberg during the Battle of the Seelow Heights.
