Maurice Stern is an American operatic tenor. He studied at the Eastman School of Music and with Franco Corelli in New York City.[1] In 1959 he made his debut at the New York City Opera as The Emperor Altoum in Giacomo Puccini's Turandot. He performed regularly with the company through 1963. While in New York City he was Dustin Hoffman's roommate, and notably introduced the actor to his wife. In the 1970s he lived in Seattle and taught on the faculty of the University of Washington. In 1979 he became a member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein,[1] and was that house's leading dramatic tenor for many years. In 1985 he sang the role of Dick Johnson in Puccini's La fanciulla del West at the Festival dei Due Mondi. In 1991 he sang Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos with the Seattle Opera. He has also sung roles with the Austin Lyric Opera, Detroit Opera, Hawaii Opera Theatre, Houston Grand Opera, and Opera Colorado.[1] He is the father of singer Jennifer Rush.
