Description

Matthew 10 consists almost entirely of Jesus's sayings. In this chapter, Jesus sends out the Twelve Apostles to heal and preach throughout the region and gives them careful instruction. Many of the sayings found in Matthew 10 are also found in Luke 10 and the Gospel of Thomas, which is not found in the accepted New Testament canon.

Verses 2-4 of the chapter list the names of Jesus's disciples.

Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. (King James Version)

Besides giving his disciples instructions, the author also inserted many miscellaneous sayings, a majority of which have close or remote parallels found in the Gospel of Thomas.
