Susan Turnbull

Susan W. Turnbull is a United States political activist who was elected Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in February 2005. A member of the DNC since her election from the State of Maryland in 1992, Ms. Turnbull has served on the DNC Executive Committee since 1997. From 1997 until her appointment as DNC Deputy Chair in the fall of 2003, she was the elected Chair of the DNC Women's Caucus. From 2002-2004 she served as National Chair of the Women’s Leadership Forum.

Ms. Turnbull is a frequent Democratic Party spokesperson on national cable television and talk radio programs. She appears on FOX News Channel and MSNBC often as a Democratic spokesperson. In 2000 she was a platform speaker at the Democratic National Convention. She has campaigned for the Democratic Party and its candidates at functions in 35 states and the District of Columbia, and with Democrats Abroad.

Ms. Turnbull was awarded both the Montgomery County Democratic Party Democrat of the Year (2000) and the Maryland Democratic Party Distinguished Service Award (2003). From 1990 -1993 She was the elected Vice Chair of the Montgomery County Democratic Party and served as the Party Chair in 1993 -1994.

Ms. Turnbull has served as Senior Advisor to Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand and as a Grants Advisor to Congressmen Brad Ellsworth and Nick Lampson since the spring of 2007.

With a background in Urban Planning and Design, Ms. Turnbull has worked in a variety of legislative and governmental positions for more than 30 years. Ms. Turnbull holds a B.S. Magna Cum Laude in Community Services from the University of Cincinnati, a M.S. from the University of Maryland in Urban Studies and a B.A. in Interior Design from the Marymount University.

Currently the principal of an Interior Space Planning business, Ms. Turnbull manages the construction and design of the Hillel International Center in Washington, DC, the interior design of the Winnick Center at Syracuse University and the 2003 renovation of Brooklyn College Hillel in New York. She also has provided pro bono design services for the Jewish Social Service Agency of Metropolitan Washington for several years and currently is on the construction team for the agency’s new headquarters.

Ms. Turnbull has participated on local community, PTA, and charitable boards for over 25 years, including serving for four years as Vice President of the Jewish Social Service Agency, of which she is a life member of the Board of Directors. She was honored by Jewish Women International Magazine as one of ten “Jewish Women to Watch” in 2005 and joined the JWI Board of Trustees in 2006.

Susan and her husband Bruce Turnbull live in Bethesda, Maryland; they have two adult sons, Joshua and David.
