- Mary Kay Kusner
-
Mary Kay Kusner was born and raised Catholic and attended Boston College where she received her Masters in Pastoral Ministry. At that time, many of her peers were leaving the Catholic Church to be ordained elsewhere. Mary Kay said, "I want my presence to speak louder than my absence.” She has remained a faithful Catholic all her life and has served as a chaplain in health care for over 20 years.
On June 13, 2010, Mary Kay will become the first Roman Catholic woman priest in the modern day, although there is evidence of a precedent set for female priests and bishops in the early church. The act of receiving ordination on the part of a woman earns automatic excommunication from the Roman Catholic Church.[1]
