PanzerkorpsBattles/wars Awards Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross Martin Gareis (6 October 1891 – 26 February 1976) was a highly decorated General der Infanterie in the Wehrmacht during World War II who held commands at the divisional, corps and army levels. He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Martin Gareis was captured by British troops in 1945, and was released in 1947.
