Mark Stephen Gray

Mark Stephen Gray (born 4 August 1970) is a spokesperson in support of the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso. He deals with all the President's media activities with the British press and is a well known commentator on European affairs. Mark Gray is well known in Bulgaria and Romania as the Commission spokesperson on the fight against corruption and organised crime.

Mark Gray joined the Spokespersons Service of the European Commission in March 2006. Mark Gray is the spokesperson for the Commission departments working directly for the President (General Secretariat, Legal Service and Bureau of European Policy Advisors).

A graduate from the University of Dundee, Mark Gray joined the Commission in 1994 as a member of the institutional affairs unit of the Secretariat General dealing with the implementation of the Maastricht Treaty and subsidiarity. He was then a member of the Commission's negotiating teams for the Treaty of Amsterdam and the Treaty of Nice.

Mark Gray worked in the private sector as a senior associate at the international law firm, White & Case LLP from 2001-2004. He re-joined the Commission on 1 May 2004 to work as a Member of Cabinet for the first Czech Commissioner, Pavel Telicka. Before being appointed to the Spokespersons Service, Mark was the Member of Cabinet dealing with institutional issues for Vice-President, Margot Wallström.

Mark Gray has written widely on the European Commission and the recent Intergovernmental Conferences. He is the co-editor with Edward Best and Alexander Stubb of “Rethinking the European Union: IGC 2000 and Beyond”, European Institute of Public Administration, Maastricht.
