Margaret Louise Skourlis

Margaret Louise Skourlis, Ms. New Jersey United States 2009 & 2010,[1] was born as a Greek-American on Saturday, March 14, 1981.

Career

She began her first beauty pageant at the age of 17 entitled the “Miss Teen New York Pageant” but had to withdraw due to financial difficulties.

When she was 20, she entered the “Miss Greek Independence Pageant”. It was there that she won her first title, “Miss Messinia 2001”. A year later, she won her second title, “Miss Melpia 2002” at the same pageant. Her final year in the pageant, she won her third title, “Miss Kalamata 2003”. The titles she received are names of places in Greece where her family is from. In addition, she participated in several other pageants including: “Miss Theartemis 2001” in Crete, Greece; “Miss A.H.E.P.A. 2005 & 2006” in New York, and “Miss Southern New York”, which was cancelled in the middle of the pageant due to severe weather conditions.

She graduated the top of her MBA Class for the year 2010 receiving Beta Gamma Sigma Honor's. Her various degrees include: BA Philosophy, MA Political Science, ABA Paralegal, RETC New York Real Estate Sales, Masters of Business Administration, and Barbizon Modeling School Diploma. She studied abroad, completed the D.I.A.S. International program twice, which had a focus on archaeology. She is currently studying an online degree for Fashion and Retail Management. She has received many scholarships throughout her years of schooling such as an AHEPA Scholarship, the Hellenic Times Scholarship Fund, Merit Fellowship Scholarship, Merit Scholarship, and Honor's Scholarships from C.W.Post.

Besides being involved in various school & community organizations, she became emulsified in social entrepreneurship. Her interest in entrepreneurship stemmed from her “Social Entrepreneurship” class taught by Dr. James Freeley, which was one of the reasons she entered into the Ms. United States Pageant. Dr. James Freeley later on became her Faculty adviser when she became President of the M.B.A. Association for Long Island University C.W. Post Campus. She spent five years to help create this Association, and as one of the founders for the Association, she became President of the Association. Throughout her life she has been involved with various school clubs.

Her second and most important reason for joining the pageant was to help shed more light for her platform, Multiple Sclerosis, to the public. Her mother, who has Multiple Sclerosis, has inspired her to use her title to help the National MS Society find a cure. Ms. New Jersey United States 2009 & 2010 is the spokesperson for the National MS Society. She works with Arney Rosenblat to help bring awareness to the illness.

In the recent turn of events, she is honored to be granted as the new 2011 Pageant Director for the Ms. New Jersey United States Pageant and Ms. New York United States Pageant. She is the current Director to Miss New Jersey United States 2010, Katerina Dimitratos. Her assistant Director is Emmanuel Kakas, a star high school wrestling coach from New Jersey, who was recently interviewed for a major wrestling website.

She is a member of the Hellenic Kyklos Society. She is a member of the Daughter's of Penelope for A.H.E.P.A. She was the President of the Pygmalion Maids of Athena CAhpater #126 for A.H.E.P.A. in 2006. She has done Greek charity events for the The Greek Children's Fund and The Ronald McDonald House. She went to Greek School called, William Spyropoulos Day School for ten years which she graduated from in 1995. She was a member of GOYA, involved with the Omospondia Federation, in the Archdiocese Oratorical Contest, attended the Pancretan Convention in Zaro, and various other Greek Events. She loves Greece and tries to help unify the Greek and Greek-American Community. Many of her family members still reside in Greece.
