In Vedic religion, Tvastr ("IAST|Tvaṣṭṛ", also transliterated as Tvashtr, Tvastri or Tvashtri, nominative "IAST|Tvaṣṭā") is the "heavenly builder", the maker of divine implements, especially
Indra 'svajra . He is the former of the bodies of men and animals, and therefore called "firstborn" and invoked when desiring offspring, called "garbha-pati" "lord of fetuses".Tvastr is the
Sanskrit term for "carpenter" and especially "chariot maker". Tvastr is mentioned in theMitanni treaty, which establishes him as aProto-Indo-Iranian divinity.Tvastr is sometimes associated or identified with similar deities, such as
Savitr ,Prajapati orPushan . He is the father ofSaranyu , who twice bears twins toVivasvat orVayu (RV 8.26), Yama andYami , also identified as the first humans, and theAsvins . He is also the father ofTrisiras , who was killed byIndra . Tvashtri created Vrtra, a fearsomedragon , in revenge.Tvastr is a
solar deity in theMahabharata and theHarivamsa . He is mentioned as the son ofSurya andAditi inHinduism , and said to have made the three worlds with pieces of thesun (Surya is thesolar deity ).Tvastr is often compared to
Visvakarma .
