Malika Benarab-Attou

Malika Benarab-Attou (born 25 March 1963 in Aïn Benian, Algeria) is a French politician and Member of the European Parliament elected in the 2009 European election for the South-East France constituency.

Malika Benarab-Attou was born into a Kabyle family in Algeria in 1963 and her family immigrated to France in 1968, where her father worked in a Renault factory. She was active in anti-racist organizations, yet she refused to join SOS Racisme on the ground that the latter was used for other means on the political level. She mvoed to Chambéry in 2006 in the Savoie region of South-East France.

Malika Benarab-Attou joined The Greens in 2003. In the 2009 European elections, she was the third candidate on the Europe Écologie list (the Greens) in the South-East region, and was elected to the European Parliament.

As a member of the Culture and Education Committee of the European Parliament, Malika Benarab-Attou is in charge of coordinating her political group's positions and actions in the fields of Culture, Education, Sports, Youth but also Media and Multilinguism.

Likewise Malika Benarab-Attou is a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, the latter deals with the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP) of the European Union. It is also in charge of promoting human rights and protecting minority rights and rights of individuals in the world as shared values of the European Union. Besides, the committee is the largest one in the Parliament, it has to decide on key EU foreign policy issues such as the adoption of agreements between the EU and third countries like China or the US.

Also within the framework of her activities as member of the European Parliament, Malika Benarab-Attou is a member of the "Euromed Delegation" that is the Euromediterranean Parliamentary Assembly where countries from across the Mediterranean can exchange their views and decide on Mediterranean projects and policies. She is also a member of the Maghreb delegation in charge of the relations between the European Parliament and Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Mauritania, and finally she is a member of the Panafrican Parliament delegation.
