Antoni Maria Alcover Sureda (1862-1932) was born on the Mediterranean island of Majorca in 1862. He came from the town of Manacor which is located on the eastern side of the island. He became a priest and is famous because he wrote a collection of Majorcan Folk Tales. During his long summer holidays he travelled from village to village and listened to the old storytellers. The stories they told had been passed on over the years but nobody had ever written them down. Antoni Maria Alcover was afraid that they would disappear and for that reason he collected as many as he could. Between the years 1880 and 1931 he published them under the pseudonym "Jordi des Racó". Today there are 24 volumes containing a total of 431 folktales. Antoni Maria Alcover died in 1932. His folktales have been translated into English.
