Jeroen van Busleyden

Jeroen Van Busleyden (French: Jérôme de Busleyden) (Arlon, ca. 1470 - Bordeaux, 27 August 1517) was a patron of learning and humanist from the Southern Netherlands, the Belgian part of the Burgundian Netherlands, c.q. Leo Belgicus.

Life

Busleyden studied in Italy. He was a member of the Great Council of Mechelen, a friend of Erasmus and a sponsor of the Collegium Trilingue at the University of Louvain. He was also a friend of Thomas More. His brother, Frans Van Busleyden, filled several church and political functions in the Burgundian Netherlands.

He resided in Mechelen, at the Hof van Busleyden, in an early renaissance style, where he led a life of patron and humanist. The Hof van Busleyden is now a museum.
