dream hampton (she writes her name in lower case letters, in emulation of feminist author bell hooks, who was an early influence) is a hip-hop journalist,[1] cultural critic,[2] and filmmaker.

Life and career

Hampton is originally from Detroit lived in Brooklyn and Harlem for most of her life. She studied film at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where she filmed her neighbor Christopher "Notorious B.I.G." Wallace for a documentary class. She was an Associate Producer of VH1's Emmy-award winning Behind the Music: Notorious B.I.G. and co-produced Bigger than Life, the first feature-length documentary on the rapper, directed by Peter Spier. Her short film I am Ali was an entry at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival[3] and won "Best Short Film" at Vanity Fair's Newport Film Festival.

Hampton has written about music, culture and politics for 20 years. She was the first female editor of The Source magazine,[4] editor in chief of Los Angeles-based Rap Pages Magazine[5] and a writer for Vibe,[6] The Village Voice,[7] and Spin.[8] She is noted as a "pioneering" black female journalist.[9] Other publications her writings have appeared in include The Detroit News, Harper's Bazaar, Essence and various anthologies, including Born to Use Mics: Reading Nas's Illmatic (edited by Michael Eric Dyson).

Hampton is co-author[10] of Jay-Z's New York Times bestselling[11] book, Decoded, and also co-authored the unreleased Black Book with him. She is co-writing rapper Q-Tip's memoir, Industry Rules, due to be released in 2011.[12] She was also reportedly working with Sean Combs on his autobiography.[13]

Hampton was a founding member of Malcolm X Grass Roots Movement (MXGM), sponsor of Black August" the yearly tribute concert benefiting political prisoners.[14] Her film about the event, Black August: A Hip-Hop Documentary Concert, debuted at Lincoln Center in 2010.[15]
