Samuel Leonard Stanley, Jr. (January 11, 1954-) is an American Educator and currently the fifth president of the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He formerly served as the Vice Chancellor for Research at Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr. Stanley received his B.A. from The College of the University of Chicago and was selected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1976 and was an Albert Schweitzer fellow at Harvard University School of Medicine, where he received his M.D. in 1980. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and his fellowship in infectious disease at Washington University in St. Louis. He is married to Ellen Li, a practicing gastroenterologist and active researcher.
Since 2003 he has been the Director of the Midwest Regional Center of Excellence for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases Research.
