Dr. Ellen J. Kennedy, Founder and Executive Director of World Without Genocide

Ellen J. Kennedy, Ph.D., is the founder and Executive Director of World Without Genocide, "a nonprofit organization committed to protecting innocent people around the world; preventing genocide by combating racism and prejudice; advocating for the prosecution of perpetrators; and remembering those whose lives and cultures have been destroyed by violence."

Through World Without Genocide, Ellen promotes Holocaust and genocide education in high schools, colleges, faith-based organizations, and civic groups and advocates with elected officials at city, state, and national levels. Kennedy was a professor at the University of St. Thomas for nearly twenty years and the Interim Director at the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, University of Minnesota, for three years.

Education/Involvement

Kennedy received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and doctorate degrees in both sociology and business from the University of Minnesota. She is on the boards of the United Nations Association of Minnesota; Southdale YMCA; Rotary Club of Edina; and Sociologists of Minnesota.

Awards

Kennedy has received many awards for her work, including the 2004 “Higher Education Leader of the Year” award from the National Society for Experiential Education, the 2009 “Outstanding Citizen” award from the Anne Frank Center, the 2010 Jane Addams Outstanding Service Award from the Midwest Sociological Society, and two awards in 2010 from the University of Minnesota.
