Sunkara Venkata Adinarayana Rao (born June 30, 1939) is an Indian orthopaedic surgeon noted for his work with the poor and needy. His adherence to three principles: social justice, social responsibility and social service, endeared him to the masses.[1] His Teacher and Mentor is Professor Chavali Vyaghreswarudu. He used to accompany and assist him, at the free orthopaedic camps conducted by the latter in different states of India.

Childhood and Family
He was born in Bhimavaram, West Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh, India. His parents were Mrs. Sunkara Seshamma and Mr.Sunkara Kanakam. Both of them were freedom fighters and taught him that serving the needy was more important than monetary gains.
His wife, R. Sashiprabha, is the superintendent of the King George Hospital. His brother, the well-known neuro surgeon Sunkara Balaparameswara Rao, from whom he draws inspiration.
Education
His primary and higher education was held at ULCM High School, Bhimavaram. He was active student with lot of interest in Sports and Field Games. He was an individual champion of events from school days.
He did his Bachelors Degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam (1961-66 batch) and Masters Degree in Orthopaedic Surgery (M.S. Orthopedics) from the same institute in 1970. He was trained in Microvascular and hand surgery in Germany. He played an active role in curricular and extra-curricular activities of the Andhra Medical College holding key posts in student activity bodies. He holds an unbeaten record in 100 mts. Dash for the Indian Medical Colleges and won many medals in the inter-university and inter-medical college’s sports meets.
He has worked as Tutor, Assistant Professor and Professor of Traumatology/Orthopaedics in Andhra Medical College; as Civil Assistant Surgeon and Civil Surgeon in King George Hospital; as Superintendent of Rani Chandramani Devi Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre. He has presented many research papers in various state and national conferences/seminars including the paper at SICOT, Tel Aviv, Israel. He has delivered the Kini Memorial oration at Trivandrum. He was the author and publisher of the book Surgery on Polio Disability and editor of the Principles and Practice of Orthopaedics - IV Edition - 1993.
Service activities
He is the Managing Trustee of Free Polio Surgical and Research Foundation, a non-profit charity organization working with the Motto of making the Immobile - Mobile and Independent.
He is well known for his innovative corrective surgeries for persons having deformities of the limbs secondary to the post-polio residual paralysis, cerebral palsy and other congenital conditions like club foot, etc.
His Free corrective surgery for the poor and needy persons with disabilities is involved in this service activity spreading to the nook and corner of India since 1978. Most patients require more than one surgical procedure due to complexity and recurrence of the deformities.
He is the Director General, Prema School of Nursing and Prema Sagari College of Nursing - Quality, recognized, Non-profit education to socially and economically backward people in Nursing. It has a full-fledged operation theatre, which has the facility to operate on nine patients simultaneously. Dormitory facilities for patients and their escorts, a community kitchen and subsidised canteen facility are also provided at the hospital.
He is the Director General, Dr. Vyaghreswarudu Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and imparting recognized degree course in Physiotherapy.

- Ugadi Puraskaram by Madras Telugu Academy for his meritorious service to his fellow human beings and his motherland.
- Prestigious Bhagwan Mahaveer Award for his excellence in human endeavor in the field of community and social service.
- Has been felicitated and awarded different titles by more than 100 Nongovernmental organizations during the free polio surgical camps held at different states of the country.
